Extension of the elementary school Schüttaustraße

The existing elementary school located at the Schüttaustraße was extended. Five classes, a leisure class and a gymnasium with its necessary ancillary rooms were added to the building. A previously made feasibility study recommended building upper floors above the existing gymnasium. It allows the achievement of the essential capacities of space. The overall concept for the extension is in the centre of a field of tensions resulting form costs, the limitation of the specified height and space requirements. The realisation was achieved using an economic load-bearing system of pillars, columns and beams.

During the implementation of the construction, considerable improvements for practical usability were achieved through functional enhancements. The extension is barrier-free accessible from the main building and also provides an architectural eye-catcher. The functional design of the link to the teacher’s area and the ideally proportioned leisure areas for students as well as the generous barrier-free access allow the efficiency in space. An architecturally designed branch, which connects the existing building and the extension, creates a zone for accessing the floor, relaxing and developing.

These innovations required the cooperation of different companies, especially while constructing the gymnasium. To traverse the span of 22.9 m above the existing gymnasium, RWT plus ZT GmbH, Woschitz Engineering ZT GmbH and Franz Oberndorfer GmbH & Co KG cooperated to achieve extraordinary results. They developed a prestressed concrete beam with a total weight of 37.6 t. It was lifted by an 800 t crane owned by Felbermayr Transport- und Hebetechnik GmbH & Co KG. The employees of Handler Bau GmbH, which is the general contractor of the project, positioned and installed the beam professionally.

Such beams are primarily used for bridge construction. Only the vast experience and the full range of services provided by the companies of the Woschitz Group allowed this advantageous combination of materials within such an innovative design. The cooperation of the architects and the site owner added its share to it. Particularly noteworthy is the aspect, that the expertise of the RWT plus ZT GmbH office in Feldkirchen regarding the field of bridge construction could be used for the efficient implementation.

The architectural innovation in the building is the external stair construction which also allows their use as escape stairs. The stairs made from steel find their place in the naturally resulting shaft between the existing building and the extension. The static anchorage in the newly built annexe and a single reinforced concrete disk let it appear filigree and elegant, despite its massive steel construction.

The elevator of the staircase, which is protected as a historical monument, was transferred to the façade and on the third floor surrounded by a steel and glass reinforcement. Theses, as well as other small construction measures in the existing building, changed it to a barrier-free building, leaving it untouched from the perspective of monument protection.

The layout of the façade is dominated by the selection of materials and design elements. The visual assessment and the impact of the existing building and the extension were paramount. The internal façade was made with fine plaster, while the external one is characterised by rough plaster.

The client of the project was the City of Vienna – Municipal Department 56, which was represented by WIP – Wiener Infrastruktur Projekt GmbH. The architectural design was provided by the architectural firm MAGK Aichholzer Klein ZT OG. Woschitz Engineering ZT GmbH was in charge of the structural design and construction supervision according to the Construction Coordination Act. RWT plus ZT GmbH provided the structural design and building physics. Both companies are members of the Woschitz Group.
