Innovative reuse of wind turbine blades
On October 15th, 2020 Energie Burgendland selected the winners of the “ReUse Challenge”. We, the Woschitz Engineering, won the 2nd place in the Challenge. The topic “ReUse” became more and more important for our company, therefore it was very important for us to participate in this challenge from Energie Burgenland.
By 2025, wind power pioneer Energie Burgenland will invest a total of 233 million euros in the expansion of wind power and “repower” several existing wind farms. Aging turbines will be replaced by ultra-modern and more powerful wind power plants. The “ReUse-Challenge” competition has been launched for the recycling of disused wind turbine blades. Numerous ideas and concepts were submitted online, and the response was enormous with 85 proposed projects from 52 entrants. The award ceremony for the 10 prize-winning projects took place on October 15th at the Cultural Center Eisenstadt, considering all applicable safety regulations.
During the lockdown in the corona crisis we used the time for a virtual brainstorming and out of many ideas, two essential projects emerged from it.
- On the one hand the reuse of the wind vane as a bridge construction and
- on the other hand the reuse of the wind vane as an innovative roof construction.
With both ideas, the resilient wind turbine blade can be retaines instead of a concrete or steel construction, thus saving costs.
The “bridge structure” procet from Woschitz Engineering was awarded with the 2nd place. Our second submitted project “innovative roof construction” was also recognized. We would be pleased about a joint realization with Energie Burgenland as well as an innovative builder-owner.
